Why Dennis Wilson's Biopic Collapsed

'The Drummer,' which focused on Wilson's solo masterpiece 'Pacific Ocean Blue,' won't carry on without Aaron Eckhart.

The long-in-the-works Dennis Wilson bio-pic The Drummer will most likely never go into production. According a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Eckhart - who was set to star in the film as the troubled Beach Boys drummer - backed out of the project because he was too exhausted following the shooting of I, Frankenstein.

Vera Farmiga was cast as Wilson's girlfriend Christine McVie and Eckhart spent six months learning to sing and play drums, but producers now indicate they will likely not carry on with a new leading man and many involved with the film have moved onto other projects. The Dennis Wilson Trust added that "the project is officially off."

The screenplay started in 1977, skipping well past the pinnacle of the Beach Boys success and the drummer's brief relationship with Charles Manson. It focused on the creation of Wilson's solo masterpiece Pacific Ocean Blue and his difficult final years before drowning in Marina del Ray, California on December 28th, 1983.

Movies about real-life rock stars rarely do well at the box office. CBGB - a chronicle of the New York punk scene in the 1970s - opened in October to mostly negative reviews and mass public disinterest.
